Constitution Day

2 February 2026 · movable holiday — Laws on a scroll, stars over Mexico – enjoy the day off!

Constitution Day in Mexico recalls the country's fundamental law, adopted on 5 February 1917 by a constituent congress in the city of Querétaro. The document built on the earlier constitution of 1857 and placed rights such as free education and labour protections at the heart of the state. It came into force on 1 May 1917. Today the holiday is observed on the first Monday of February, which creates a long weekend. This rule was introduced by a change to labour law in 2006. Many people use the time for family outings, while schools and public buildings hold ceremonies with the green, white and red flag. The link to the sky lies in the calendar: early February sits roughly halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, and in these weeks the constellation Orion stands out clearly in the evening sky over Mexico. That is why our hero is a scroll of shining dots, writing law among the stars.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a half-unrolled scroll with a quill drifting across the night sky
