National Day of the Cowboy
25 July 2026 · movable holiday — Yee-haw! I lassoed a constellation. It ran, but not fast enough!
National Day of the Cowboy is observed in the United States on the fourth Saturday of July. It honors cowboys and ranch life: the hard work, independent spirit and traditions of the American West. The idea is to keep alive the stories and skills of people who herded cattle, rode long distances and lived close to nature. The day has been recognized by resolutions of the U.S. Senate and by some states, but it is not an official federal holiday. It is usually marked with rodeos, horse races, music, campfire songs and tales of ranch life. The date is movable and is not tied to any astronomical event. Still, the late-July sky is wonderful for stargazing: far from city lights the Milky Way stands out clearly, just as it does for people on a ranch at night. It is not a public day off.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure of a lone rider in a wide-brimmed hat, drawn from bright dots and thin lines like a constellation, galloping across the sky on a star-horse
