Capoeirista Day

3 August 2026 — Ginga, ginga! One cartwheel among the stars – and back to the roda!

Capoeira is a Brazilian art that blends martial arts, dance, acrobatics and music. Its roots lie with enslaved Africans in colonial Brazil, who developed it as a form of resistance and self-expression. It is played in a circle called the roda, where two players hold a wordless conversation through movement while the others sing, clap and play the berimbau (a single-string musical bow with a gourd resonator). Typical moves include the ginga (the constant, swaying base step), the aú (a sideways cartwheel) and many kicks that rarely touch the partner. In 2014 UNESCO inscribed the Roda de Capoeira on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Capoeirista Day is marked in Brazil on 3 August. It has no link to the lunar or solar calendar, but our cartwheeling hero echoes the turning of the heavens.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin lines, like a constellation, cartwheeling gracefully across the night sky with a trail of faint star-dust; no face details, only a flowing dancer's silhouette
