Canary Islands Day

30 May 2026 — Tweet! Over Teide I sing for my islands!

Canary Islands Day (Día de Canarias) is celebrated every year on 30 May. It is a regional holiday in the Canary Islands, an autonomous community of Spain in the Atlantic Ocean. The date commemorates the first session of the Canarian parliament in 1983, after the region received its Statute of Autonomy. The day celebrates local identity, culture and nature. Events often include lucha canaria (traditional Canarian wrestling), folk music and dances, exhibitions, and festive meals of local dishes across the islands. The canary, a bird that takes its name from the islands, is one of their natural symbols. Above the archipelago rises Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain, whose clear skies are famed among astronomy lovers for excellent stargazing. The holiday has a fixed date and does not depend on the lunar calendar.
