King Kamehameha Day

11 June 2026 — A lei of stars for King Kamehameha – aloha!

King Kamehameha Day is celebrated on June 11 and is an official state holiday in Hawaii. It honors Kamehameha I, known as the Great, who united the Hawaiian Islands under a single rule in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The holiday was proclaimed in 1871 by King Kamehameha V. Traditionally, the statue of Kamehameha in Honolulu is draped with long garlands of flowers called lei (wreaths of flowers given in Hawaii as a sign of respect and affection). Celebrations also include parades with riders and floats, music, hula and ceremonies with Hawaiian songs and dance. The date is fixed on the calendar and is not tied to a particular astronomical event, but June 11 falls just days before the summer solstice, when in the tropics the Sun passes almost directly overhead. The night skies over Hawaii are famously good for stargazing, and ancient Polynesian navigators used the stars to find their way across the Pacific.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver constellation shaped like long flowing garlands of flowers, made of luminous dots and thin lines, drifting slowly across the night sky like a living constellation
