The holidays of the sky

📖

International Literacy Day

8 September 2026 — Every letter is a star – arrange them and you can read the sky!

International Literacy Day is observed every year on 8 September. UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) officially proclaimed it in 1966, and it was first celebrated in 1967. The date marks the opening, on 8 September 1965, of the World Conference of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy in Tehran, which recommended establishing the day. Its aim is to remind us that reading and writing are a basic human right and a foundation for dignity, development and equality. Each year UNESCO chooses a special theme, and around the world people organise readings, campaigns, book donations and learning programmes for children and adults. In spirit, the day is close to Bulgaria's 24 May, the Day of Saints Cyril and Methodius, of the Bulgarian Alphabet, Education and Culture, and of Slavonic Literature. The link to the sky is a lovely one: for thousands of years people have read the stars like a written text, and constellations were the first pages from which sailors and farmers learned. The date is fixed and does not depend on the Moon, so it falls on the same day each year.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin lines, like a constellation: an open winged book drifting across the night sky
