German Unity Day
3 October 2026 — Hand in hand beneath one gate – happy Unity Day!
German Unity Day is celebrated on 3 October and is Germany's national holiday. On that date in 1990 the German Democratic Republic joined the Federal Republic of Germany, and the two parts of the country, divided after the Second World War, became one state again. The day has been an official holiday since 1990. Before that, West Germany marked its national day on 17 June.
Every year the main celebrations are hosted by a different federal state, the one holding the presidency of the Bundesrat (the upper house of parliament). There are public festivals, concerts, open days in institutions, church services and fireworks. The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, once a symbol of division and now of unity, is a frequent gathering place.
The link with the sky is the calendar: early October brings longer nights and crisp autumn skies, a fine time to look for constellations.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of bright dots and connected lines, like a constellation: the Brandenburg Gate with its columns and quadriga drawn in starlight, with a chain of small star-people holding hands in front of it
