Folklore Day (Brazil)
22 August 2026 — Saw a whirlwind? That is me, Saci! Keep the old tales alive!
Folklore Day in Brazil is celebrated every year on 22 August. The date goes back to 22 August 1846, when the British scholar William John Thoms published a letter in The Athenaeum proposing the word „folk-lore“ for the study of the customs, beliefs and songs of ordinary people. Brazil officially recognised the day in 1965, and it encourages the preservation of legends, music, dances and festivals. One of the best-loved figures of Brazilian folklore is Saci, a one-legged boy who travels in whirlwinds and plays pranks on people. Other well-known characters include the Curupira and Iara. The day is a fine excuse to retell old stories under the night sky, just as generations have done before us.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a one-legged boy with a pointed cap and a small pipe, spinning inside a swirling whirlwind of glittering star-dust
