Johnny Appleseed Day
11 March 2026 — I sow seeds today, and tomorrow apples will bloom here!
This day honors John Chapman (1774–1845), an American nurseryman remembered in folklore as Johnny Appleseed. He traveled west through Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana, planting apple nurseries and selling or giving the seedlings to settlers. Legend says he went barefoot and wore a cooking pot as a hat, though that detail is more tale than documented fact. Historians do agree that he really did raise apple nurseries. In the United States the day is marked on March 11 in some sources, while others give September 26, his birthday. Traditions are simple: baking apple treats, planting a tree, and telling his stories in schools. There is no direct link to the sky, but March is the start of spring sowing in the northern hemisphere, so our hero scatters seeds along the Milky Way.
