International Volunteer Day
5 December 2026 — One small helping hand is enough to make a star shine again!
International Volunteer Day is observed every year on 5 December. It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985 to thank people who give their time and energy to others without pay, and to encourage societies to value volunteering. The United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV) helps countries and organisations involve volunteers in all kinds of work, from protecting the environment and supporting vulnerable people to responding to disasters. Each year the day has a common theme, and organisations and communities around the world mark it with clean-ups, meetings and events to say thank you. The date is fixed and does not depend on a lunar calendar or the solstice, but it falls in early December, when in the Northern Hemisphere nights are long and stars appear early in the evening. The little star with a bucket is a reminder that even the faintest light grows stronger when people help one another.
Flying across the sky: A small ethereal bluish-silver star figure made of light dots and thin connecting lines, like a tiny constellation, carrying a little bucket and drifting across the night sky
