International Children's Day

1 June 2026 — Catch the kite! It's the first of June, and the sky is a playground!

The first of June is celebrated as Children's Day in Bulgaria and in many other countries, especially in the former socialist bloc and in China. The date is linked to the International Day for the Protection of Children, observed since the 1950s. It highlights every child's right to care, education, play and safety. It should not be confused with the United Nations' World Children's Day (20 November), which is a separate observance with a different origin. In Bulgaria the day is full of children's concerts, drawing contests, sports games, free performances and walks in the park. Schools and towns organise outdoor festivities, while adults are reminded to think about what they can do for a better childhood. June 1 also falls at the start of summer: the days are long and the evening sky stays light until late. So it is a lovely day to go outside, fly a kite, and look for the first stars once dusk arrives. The date is fixed and falls on June 1 every year.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver constellation figure made of bright dots and fine lines: a group of children riding kites and floating on balloons, chasing one another across the starry sky, with thin glowing kite tails trailing behind them like the lines of a star map
