Statehood Day of Serbia (Sretenje)

15 February 2026 — Not with a sword, but a quill: a state is written with laws!

On 15 February Serbia marks Statehood Day, also known as Sretenje (Candlemas). The date matches the Christian feast of the Presentation of the Lord, which falls on 2 February in the Julian calendar used by the Serbian Orthodox Church, and so on 15 February in the Gregorian calendar. On Sretenje in 1804 the First Serbian Uprising began at Orašac, and on the same date in 1835 the Sretenje Constitution, Serbia's first constitution, was adopted in Kragujevac. For its time it was among the more liberal in Europe, though it was soon repealed. The holiday has been observed since 2002, and 15 and 16 February are days off. Customary events include solemn ceremonies, wreath-laying and cultural programmes. The link to the sky is the calendar itself: the date falls in the last stretch of winter, as days slowly grow longer. Today it is remembered above all as a celebration of law and statehood.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin connecting lines, like a constellation: a large quill drifting across the night sky above an unrolled scroll with a round seal
