International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies

7 September 2026 — Clean air, clear sky! Look how many stars came out!

The International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies is marked on 7 September. The UN General Assembly established it by resolution in 2019, and it was first observed in 2020. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) leads the day together with the World Health Organization and other partners. Its aim is to remind us that air pollution harms both health and climate, and that we can improve it together through cleaner transport, cleaner energy and less open burning of waste. The day has a clear link to the sky: dust and smoke hide the stars, while clean air makes the night sky darker and more transparent. Stargazers therefore have good reason to care about the air we breathe. The best way to celebrate is to step outside on a clear evening and look up.
