Uncle Sam Day

13 September 2026 — Hello, friend! I'm waving from the sky – wave back!

Uncle Sam is a folk personification of the United States and its government. The figure is linked to Samuel Wilson, born on 13 September 1766 in Menotomy (now Arlington), Massachusetts, who later became a meat packer in Troy, New York. According to popular tradition, during the War of 1812 he supplied the army with meat, and his barrels were stamped „U.S.“, which soldiers jokingly tied to „Uncle Sam“. Historians stress that the origin of the nickname is not fully certain. The familiar look, with a star-studded top hat, striped trousers and a goatee, took shape in the 19th century, mostly through cartoons. In 1961 Congress recognized Wilson as the progenitor of America’s national symbol, Uncle Sam, and in 1989 a congressional resolution designated 13 September, Wilson’s birthday, as Uncle Sam Day. It is especially dear to the city of Troy, which takes pride in Wilson as one of its own. It has no link to a solstice or the lunar cycle, but September skies are a fine time for stargazing.
