International Black Sea Day
31 October 2026 — I'm leaping over the waves – help keep my sea clean!
Black Sea Day is marked on 31 October. It is linked to the signing of the Strategic Action Plan for the Rehabilitation and Protection of the Black Sea in Istanbul in 1996. The plan is part of the cooperation of the Black Sea countries under the Bucharest Convention, a 1992 treaty against pollution of the sea. Six countries share the coast today: Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia and Türkiye. Three kinds of cetaceans live in the sea: two dolphins – the bottlenose dolphin and the common dolphin – and their close relative, the harbour porpoise. That is why a dolphin leaps across the sky today. The day is an occasion for environmental campaigns, beach clean-ups and lessons about the sea. There is a link to the sky as well: on autumn evenings the small constellation Delphinus (the Dolphin) can be seen. Sailors have steered by the stars since ancient times.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure of a bottlenose dolphin made of pale points of light and thin lines, like a constellation leaping in a graceful arc across the night sky
