National Charro Day

14 September 2026 — Ride on, charro! Throw your lasso and catch the stars before autumn comes!

The charro is the traditional Mexican horseman, recognised by his wide-brimmed sombrero, elegant embroidered outfit and skill with the lasso. National Charro Day (Día Nacional del Charro) is observed in Mexico on 14 September, honouring the country's equestrian heritage. At its heart is charrería, the Mexican horsemanship art of riding, roping and skilled performances on horseback, handed down from generation to generation. In 2016 UNESCO inscribed charrería on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. At this time of year the sky is moving toward autumn: the September equinox falls around 22–23 September, when day and night are nearly equal. On our sky, the charro gallops among the stars with a lasso ready to catch one of them.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver constellation-like figure made of luminous dots and thin lines: a horseback rider in a wide-brimmed sombrero, swinging a looping lasso that trails sparkling stars
