Labor Thanksgiving Day

23 November 2026 — Thank you for every bit of work, and for every grain of rice!

Labor Thanksgiving Day (Kinrō Kansha no Hi) is celebrated in Japan every year on 23 November and is a public holiday. It is rooted in the ancient harvest rite Niinamesai, in which the emperor offers the first rice of the season to the deities and tastes it himself in thanks for the year. After the Second World War, in 1948, the holiday received its present name and meaning: respect for labor, celebration of production, and mutual gratitude among people. Today, children in many schools and communities give cards and small tokens of thanks to working people, and some places hold events and campaigns of appreciation. The date is fixed in the Gregorian calendar, yet the spirit of the day is autumnal and tied to the end of the harvest. The nights are long and the evening sky is often clear, good for stargazing, and a rice sheaf among the stars is a reminder of the fruits of shared work.
