Thanksgiving

26 November 2026 · movable holiday — The turkey brings pie and thanks for everyone at the table!

Thanksgiving in the United States is a family holiday for giving thanks for the past year and the harvest. Its roots lie in autumn harvest celebrations known in North America since the early colonists. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation calling on the whole nation to observe Thanksgiving on the last Thursday of November, and it has been celebrated nationwide every year since. A law passed in late 1941 set it, from 1942 onward, on the fourth Thursday of November, so the date moves from year to year. The traditional meal includes roast turkey, stuffing, cranberries and pumpkin pie. Many families gather around the table, and big cities hold parades and sports games. The holiday falls in late autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, when nights are long and there is more time for stargazing. That is why our turkey, with its fan of autumn feathers, crosses the constellations to remind us to pause and say “thank you”.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of light dots and thin lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a plump turkey with a wide fan of feather-like star trails, carrying a round pie on a small tray of twinkling points
