International Day for Biological Diversity

22 May 2026 — Every creature matters, and every star on my wings knows it!

The International Day for Biological Diversity is observed every year on 22 May, as proclaimed by the United Nations. The date recalls 22 May 1992, when the final text of the Convention on Biological Diversity was adopted in Nairobi. The convention itself was opened for signature at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992. The day was first marked on 29 December and was later moved to 22 May. Biological diversity means the variety of life: species of plants, animals and fungi, their genes, and the ecosystems they form. Each year the UN suggests a theme, and schools, parks, museums and conservation groups around the world organise nature walks, exhibitions, tree planting and bird or insect watching. The day is tied to a fixed date, not to a solstice or a lunar calendar. Still, the night sky offers its own kind of variety: stars differ in colour, size and age, just as butterflies, which help pollinate plants, differ in pattern and shape.
