Father's Day

21 June 2026 · movable holiday — Dad, hold me tight – my kite is reaching the stars!

Father's Day in Mexico (Día del Padre) is celebrated on the third Sunday of June, just as in the United States and many other countries. The idea of the holiday goes back to the early twentieth century in the USA, where Sonora Smart Dodd proposed honouring fathers after her own father raised her alone. In Mexico it has become an established family occasion. Children give cards and handmade gifts, and families gather for a shared meal, often a lunch with the father's favourite dishes. Many spend the day outdoors on a walk or playing together. Because the date is movable, it falls on a different day each year between 15 and 21 June. This is the time around the June solstice (about 21 June), when days in the northern hemisphere are longest and nights are shortest. The holiday therefore often marks the start of summer, a fine time for kites and family outings.
