Father's Day (Herrentag)

Father's Day in Germany is also called Herrentag (“gentlemen's day”) or Vatertag, and it is celebrated on Ascension Day, always a Thursday, 39 days after Catholic Easter. That is why the date moves from year to year, and the day is a public holiday. Ascension has Christian roots, but today's secular custom is more recent: groups of men, often joined by their families, head out into nature on a hike or a bike ride. A typical sight is the wooden handcart (Bollerwagen) carrying food, drinks and music. Many people simply use the day for fresh air, laughter and time with loved ones. The link to the sky lies in the calendar: Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox (fixed at 21 March in church tables), and the 39 days are counted from it. So the day falls in late spring, when the weather suits outings. It is a cheerful, family-friendly occasion, and in many places also a chance to meet the neighbours.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a cheerful father in a hat pulling a small wooden handcart (Bollerwagen) with a picnic basket, his steps leaving a faint trail of tiny stars
