Father's Day (Brazil)

9 August 2026 · movable holiday — Climb on my shoulders – the stars are closer from up here!

Father's Day in Brazil (in Portuguese, Dia dos Pais) is held on the second Sunday of August, not in June as in many other countries. According to Brazilian sources, the celebration took shape in the 1950s through advertising and commerce. It is often said that the date was originally chosen because of the feast of Saint Joachim, the father of the Virgin Mary, which at the time was celebrated in mid-August. Families gather for a long lunch, often with the traditional Brazilian barbecue (churrasco), and children make cards and give small gifts. It is a secular family occasion, not an official public holiday. August falls in winter in the Southern Hemisphere, and the nights are often clear. The Southern Cross (Cruzeiro do Sul), a constellation whose stars also appear on Brazil's national flag, can be seen in the evening sky. That makes a father and child looking together at a single star a fitting image for this day.
