Grandparents' Day
2 October 2026 — Get ready for a ride: the most precious cargo is in the basket!
In Italy, Grandparents' Day (Festa dei nonni) is celebrated on 2 October. It was established by law in 2005 and recognises the role of older people in families and society as keepers of experience, memory and care. The date coincides with the Catholic feast of the Guardian Angels, which in popular feeling echoes the idea of protection and closeness between generations. On this day Italian families gather for lunch, grandchildren give drawings, cards and flowers, and schools and municipalities organise meetings, walks and performances. The festival follows the calendar rather than any celestial event: it always falls on 2 October, in early autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. Across our sky, grandma and grandpa glide by on a tandem bicycle, their grandchild riding in the front basket, because the best journeys are the ones we take together.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: an elderly couple pedalling a tandem bicycle, with a small child peeking out of a basket in front
