National Grandparents Day
13 September 2026 · movable holiday — Sit by me – I have knitting and a whole sky of stories!
National Grandparents Day in the United States falls on the first Sunday after Labor Day, the American holiday honoring workers, held on the first Monday of September. The idea is linked to Marian McQuade of West Virginia, who campaigned for respect for older people. In 1978 the U.S. Congress passed legislation for the day, and President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation making it an official national observance (not a public holiday). September was chosen deliberately to symbolize the “autumn years” of life. Traditions are simple and warm: visiting, phoning, a family meal, looking at old photographs, sharing stories and handmade cards. Many people also visit elderly neighbors who live alone. The forget-me-not is the flower of the day. Because the date moves, it changes each year, but it always arrives as September evenings lengthen, just right for stories under the stars.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver rocking chair made of pale glowing dots and fine connecting lines, like a constellation, gently rocking as it drifts across the sky
