International Day of the Arabian Leopard

10 February 2026 — I leap from star to star – let us protect the Arabian leopard!

The Arabian leopard is one of the most endangered leopard subspecies and one of the smallest in size. It lives in rugged mountain and desert areas of the Arabian Peninsula, mainly in Oman and Yemen, and its numbers are very low. The main threats are habitat loss, a decline in the wild prey it depends on, and conflict with people. For this reason the UN General Assembly designated 10 February in 2023 as the International Day of the Arabian Leopard, to draw attention to its conservation and to the care of the region's mountain ecosystems. The day is not tied to any celestial event, but leopards are largely nocturnal hunters that move beneath the stars, so on Astronativa our spotted figure of bright points leaps across the sky as if over mountain rocks. It is a reminder of how fragile nature's balance can be, and that protection starts with awareness.
