Arabic Language Day
18 December 2026 — Every letter is a star: “نجم” means star!
Arabic Language Day is observed by the United Nations on 18 December. The date recalls 18 December 1973, when the UN General Assembly made Arabic one of its official and working languages. Today it is one of the six official languages of the organization. The observance aims to promote multilingualism and cultural diversity, and it is often marked with calligraphy exhibitions, poetry readings and talks on the history of the language. Arabic script is famous for the beauty of its calligraphy, and the language has left a deep mark on the sky as well. Many stars carry names of Arabic origin: Aldebaran, Betelgeuse, Vega. In this way astronomy preserves the memory of centuries of knowledge exchanged between cultures. That is why on Astronativa's sky today a word written in light glides by: “نجم”, meaning star.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation, forming the flowing Arabic calligraphy of the word نجم (najm, 'star')
