Day of Andalusia

28 February 2026 — Olé! Andalusia dances under the stars – happy Andalusia Day!

The Day of Andalusia is celebrated on 28 February in Andalusia, in southern Spain. It commemorates the referendum of 28 February 1980, in which Andalusians voted to pursue autonomy by the fast-track route set out in Article 151 of the Spanish Constitution. That route required approval in all eight provinces; in Almería the yes vote fell short of the required absolute majority of registered voters; later in 1980 the Cortes Generales (the Spanish parliament) passed an organic law under Article 144 of the Constitution that deemed the initiative fulfilled for Almería. The Statute of Autonomy was adopted in 1981. Today the day is an official holiday in the region. Traditionally, the green-and-white flags of Andalusia are raised, ceremonies and festivities are held, and schools often serve a breakfast of bread with olive oil, a symbol of the region. Music and flamenco are part of the celebrations. The date is fixed in the Gregorian calendar and is not tied to any lunar or solar event, but a late-February evening sky is a lovely invitation to look up.
