Dussehra / Vijayadashami

20 October 2026 · movable holiday — May the light of goodness overcome every darkness! Happy Dussehra!

Dussehra, also called Vijayadashami (“the tenth day of victory”), is one of India’s best-loved festivals. It is observed on the tenth day of the waxing moon in the month of Ashvin in the Hindu lunisolar calendar, usually in September or October, right after the nine nights of Navratri (a festival devoted to the goddess Durga). It symbolises the victory of good over evil, though different regions link it to different stories. In northern India, scenes from the Ramayana (an ancient Sanskrit epic) are performed, and large effigies of the demon Ravana are burned at the end. Elsewhere, people honour the goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura. In Mysuru, a grand procession of elephants and decorated floats takes place. Because the date follows the phases of the Moon, it shifts against the civil calendar every year.
