Earth Hour

28 March 2026 · movable holiday — Switch off the lights for an hour and see how many stars await you!

Earth Hour is an international environmental initiative organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, when thousands of homes and buildings switched off their lights for one hour. Since then the movement has spread to many countries around the world. It is usually held on the last Saturday of March at 8:30 pm local time, but the organisers announce the exact date each year. People turn off unnecessary lighting, and famous landmarks go dark as a sign of care for the planet. The event also has a link to the sky: excessive night lighting causes light pollution (artificial light that brightens the night sky and hides the stars). When the lamps go out, even in cities it becomes easier to spot the brighter stars and planets. That makes it a lovely occasion to step outside, look up and search for familiar constellations. The date falls close to the March equinox, when day and night are nearly equal in length.
