Annunciation
25 March 2026 — Spring arrives with the lily and the swallow. Happy feast day!
The Annunciation is one of the great Christian feasts. It recalls the good news that, according to the Gospel of Luke, the Archangel Gabriel brought to Mary: that she would bear Jesus. It is celebrated on 25 March, nine months before Christmas, and falls close to the spring equinox (when day and night are almost equal). In Romania it is called Bună Vestire (literally “good news”) and is a church holiday. The white lily has long been a symbol of purity and is often linked with this day in Christian art. Folk belief holds that around this time swallows return as messengers of spring. As 25 March falls during Great Lent, the Orthodox tradition allows a fish meal on this day. It is a fixed feast (it does not depend on the date of Easter), so its date stays the same every year. The Romanian Orthodox Church uses the Revised Julian calendar, which matches the Gregorian one until the year 2800.
