Epiphany (Theophania)

6 January 2026 — Bright waters, a bright day – blessed Epiphany!

Epiphany, called „Ta Fota“ („the Lights“) in Greece, is a Christian feast commemorating the baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan. According to the Gospels, the voice of God the Father was heard and the Holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove – which is why the Church sees this day as the revelation of the Holy Trinity. The feast falls on 6 January and is a public holiday in Greece. Churches hold a blessing of the waters, and afterwards a priest throws a wooden cross into the sea, a river or a lake. Brave swimmers dive to retrieve it, and the one who brings it back is believed to be blessed for the year. The best-known ceremony takes place in the port of Piraeus. The feast ends the Twelve Days of Christmas. Unlike Easter, the feast has a fixed date. Some Orthodox churches that use the Julian calendar celebrate it on 19 January in the Gregorian calendar. Light and water thus become a symbol of a new beginning.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a simple wooden cross glimmering above a gentle sea wave, with a white dove of starlight hovering over it
