Epiphany (Bogojavljenje)
19 January 2026 — Blessed Epiphany! May water and faith bring light and peace.
Epiphany commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan, when, according to the Gospels, the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in the form of a dove. In Serbia the feast is called Bogojavljenje and is marked on 19 January in the Gregorian calendar, because the Serbian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar, in which the day falls on 6 January. The central custom is the blessing of water. After the Divine Liturgy a priest throws a wooden cross into a river or lake, and brave swimmers dive in to retrieve it. Tradition says that whoever reaches it first will be healthy and blessed throughout the year. The feast closes the Christmas season. It falls in the coldest days of winter, when nights are long and the sky is often clear and full of stars. Its date is fixed in the calendar and does not depend on the phases of the Moon, so it is the same every year.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of bright dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a swimmer in a river holds a wooden cross high above the water, while a white dove drawn in glowing points hovers above it
