Epiphany (Boboteaza)
6 January 2026 — Bright waters, peace and blessings to your home!
Epiphany, called Boboteaza in Romania, is celebrated on 6 January. Christians remember the baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan, when, according to the Gospels, the Holy Spirit descended like a dove. In Romania the day has been an official public holiday since 2024. On this day priests bless the water. In many places a wooden cross is thrown into a river, lake or sea, and brave young men dive in to retrieve it. It is believed that whoever catches it will be blessed and healthy throughout the year. Believers bring home blessed water, known as agheasmă (holy water). The feast falls on a fixed date in the Gregorian calendar, at the close of the Christmas season, shortly after the winter solstice. The Romanian Orthodox Church, which uses the Revised Julian calendar, keeps it on 6 January.
