Annunciation

25 March 2026 — The swallow has brought spring. Happy Annunciation!

The Annunciation is a Christian feast of good news. According to the Gospel of Luke, the Archangel Gabriel told the Virgin Mary that she would bear Jesus. It is celebrated on 25 March, nine months before Christmas. In Bulgaria it is called Blagovets and is one of the most beloved spring holidays. Folk belief says that swallows and storks return on this day, and people welcome them as the first messengers of warm weather. In some regions, around Blagovets people take off their martenitsa (a red-and-white spring charm) and hang it on a fruit tree when they see the first swallow or stork, and in the past heavy work was avoided. Fish is often served, since in the Bulgarian Orthodox calendar the feast always falls during the Lenten fast before Easter. The date lies close to the March equinox (around 20 March), when day and night are nearly equal and the light grows stronger. In this way the sky's calendar and the church's calendar meet in one promise of a new beginning.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver swallow made of pale glowing dots and thin connecting lines, like a constellation, gliding gracefully across the night sky with softly shimmering forked tail
