Annunciation
7 April 2026 — Glad tidings of a new spring – the swallows return with good news!
The Annunciation is one of the great Christian feasts. It commemorates the good news that, according to the Gospel of Luke, the archangel Gabriel brought to the Virgin Mary: that she would bear Jesus. The Serbian name, Blagovesti, like the Bulgarian Blagoveshtenie, means “good tidings”. Churches that use the Gregorian calendar keep it on 25 March. The Serbian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar, so its 25 March falls on 7 April in the Gregorian calendar, the date used here. The feast comes nine months before Christmas and close to the spring equinox, when light begins to prevail over night. In Balkan folk belief the day is tied to the arrival of spring and the return of the swallows, seen as heralds of good weather. The white lily is a traditional symbol of purity linked with the feast. That is why our sky visitor is a symbol, a dove with a lily accompanied by swallows, and not a depiction of sacred figures.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver dove made of bright dots and fine lines, like a constellation gliding across the night sky, carrying a slender lily sprig in its beak
