Annunciation and National Day

25 March 2026 — Glad tidings and freedom – peace and light to you all!

On 25 March, Greece celebrates two occasions at once. The religious one is the Annunciation, which recalls the news that, according to the Gospel of Luke, the Archangel Gabriel brought to Mary: that she would bear Jesus. It falls nine months before Christmas and is observed by Orthodox and Catholic Christians alike. The white lily has long been its symbol of purity. The national holiday marks the start of the Greek War of Independence in 1821, which led to the creation of modern Greece. Tradition says Metropolitan Germanos of Old Patras blessed the rebels' banner at the Agia Lavra monastery, though historians debate this episode. Today Greece holds military and school parades, flags are raised, and the festive table usually features salt cod (bakaliaros) with garlic sauce (skordalia), because fish is permitted during Lent on this day. The date is fixed – 25 March every year. In the old Roman calendar this day was regarded as the spring equinox, so the feast is also linked with the start of the brighter half of the year.

Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and fine lines, like a constellation: a graceful dove with open wings carrying a slender lily, gliding slowly across the night sky
