Harvest Festival (Erntedankfest)
4 October 2026 · movable holiday — Gratitude for this year's bread and fruit.
Erntedankfest (Harvest Thanksgiving Festival) is a Christian holiday in Germany on which people give thanks to God for the fruits of the year. There is no single binding date for all churches. It is most often marked on the first Sunday of October, and in some places on a neighbouring Sunday. Churches are decorated with bread, grain, fruit, vegetables and flowers, and after the service there are often processions and shared meals. Some of the gifts are given to people in need. In rural areas an Erntekrone (a crown or wreath of ears of grain) is made and decorated with ribbons, sometimes with fruit as well. The festival echoes the farming calendar: the end of summer, the autumn equinox and the shortening days. Once the harvest is in, the evening sky seems to invite a quiet look upward. Its date follows the weekly rhythm rather than the Moon, so it moves from year to year.
