Wine Battle of Haro (Batalla del Vino)
29 June 2026 — White shirt, red wine and plenty of laughter – cheers from La Rioja!
The Wine Battle (Batalla del Vino) takes place every year on 29 June near the town of Haro in La Rioja, Spain. The day is the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, and the battle is part of the town’s June festivities. In the morning, participants dressed in white with red scarves walk in procession to the hermitage of San Felices at the Riscos de Bilibio, where a Mass is held. Afterwards the cheerful soaking begins: people douse one another with wine from bottles, wineskins, buckets and sprayers. Local tradition links the custom to an old territorial dispute between Haro and neighbouring villages, although accounts of the history vary. The festival falls shortly after the June solstice, at the start of summer, and its date is fixed, independent of the Moon. Wine is central to the culture of La Rioja, a region famed for its vineyards and cellars.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver star figure made of luminous dots and thin lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a cheerful little person in a loose shirt, holding a spray bottle and a small wineskin
