Christmas Eve
24 December 2026 — A quiet evening, a warm table. Peace and health in every home!
Christmas Eve falls on 24 December, the evening before the Nativity of Christ. In Bulgarian tradition it is one of the brightest and most family-centred evenings of the year. A strict fast is kept, so the table has no meat and carries an odd number of lenten dishes: beans, cabbage or vine-leaf rolls, stuffed peppers, dried-fruit compote, nuts and honey. A ritual loaf is kneaded, and the woman of the house hides a coin inside it for luck. The first piece is set aside for God, then pieces follow for the home and for each family member; whoever finds the coin is said to be lucky all year. The table is traditionally left uncleared until morning. Candle and incense bring light and blessing to the home, and quarrels are avoided. The link to the sky is the Star of Bethlehem, which in the Gospel account guides the Magi. The date is close to the winter solstice, when nights begin to shorten and the light slowly returns.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver figure made of luminous dots and thin lines, like a constellation drifting across the sky: a round ritual loaf decorated with dough ornaments, a small coin glinting through a cut in its crust and a single lit candle, while a bright many-pointed star slowly rises above them
