St Andrew's Day (Andreevden)
30 November 2026 — The bear rolls the pot: The bear rolls the pot: folk belief says that from today the day grows by a single grain!
St Andrew's Day falls on 30 November and honours the Apostle Andrew, the First-Called. In the Bulgarian folk calendar it is also known as Edrey. The name is tied to the belief that from this day the daylight begins to grow plump like a grain. That is why many regions cook cereals and pulses on this day, such as wheat, corn and beans. The dish is shared with neighbours and relatives, in the hope of a fruitful year. The day is also linked to the bear, which, according to folk belief, retreats to its den for its winter sleep around this time. In some places people avoid heavy work on this day so that the bear will not harm them. The sky connection lies in the calendar itself: the feast comes a few weeks before the winter solstice (around 21 December), after which the light part of the day starts to lengthen. These beliefs are folk traditions and vary from village to village.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver bear made of luminous dots and thin connecting lines, like a constellation, rolling a round pot of glowing corn kernels across the night sky
