Anastenaria

21 May 2026 — A quiet dance over embers of stars, in honour of Saints Constantine and Helen.

Anastenaria is an ancient ritual in which participants, called Anastenarides or nestinari, dance barefoot on glowing embers. It is held around 21 May, the feast day of Saints Constantine and Helen in the church calendar. In Greece the custom is linked with villages in the north of the country, including Langadas, while in Bulgaria the related nestinarstvo is kept alive in the Strandzha region, for example in the village of Bulgari. The ritual has a Christian form, though its roots are often traced to much older beliefs. At its heart are the icons of the saints, carried by the participants during the celebration. Music and rhythm accompany it, and the dance is seen as deep devotion rather than a performance. In 2009 nestinarstvo in Bulgaria was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The feast has a fixed date and falls in late spring, when the days are already long and warm. It preserves one of the most striking folk traditions of the Balkans.
