Bulgarian Education, Culture and Slavonic Literature Day
24 May 2026 — Letter by letter, to the stars! Happy 24th of May!
May 24 honours Saints Cyril and Methodius, the brothers who created the first Slavic script in the 9th century. Constantine-Cyril the Philosopher and his brother Methodius devised the Glagolitic alphabet, the oldest Slavic script, and translated sacred texts into a language the Slavs could understand. The Cyrillic alphabet, named after Cyril, developed later in the First Bulgarian Empire, within the Preslav Literary School. In Bulgaria the day is officially called the Day of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, of the Bulgarian Alphabet, Education and Culture and of Slavonic Literature. The Church venerates the brothers as saints, and schools, community cultural centres (chitalishta) and city streets host festive processions with flowers, songs and banners. Pupils carry wreaths and large letters, and people lay flowers at monuments to the brothers. The date is fixed in the civil calendar and does not depend on moon phases, but it is a lovely reason to look up and imagine letters as constellations that tell a story.
Flying across the sky: An ethereal, bluish-silver procession of Cyrillic letters drawn as constellations of bright dots and fine connecting lines, each letter carrying a small wreath of glowing star-points as it marches gently across the night sky
