What Is Lilith in a Birth Chart?

In the astrological tradition, Lilith (often called the Black Moon) is a calculated point in a birth chart, not a physical body. Most often it means the lunar apogee, the point of the Moon’s orbit farthest from Earth. Tradition reads it as a symbol of what in us goes unaccepted and of our independent side, offered as food for thought.

Short answer

Lilith in a chart is a calculated point, also called the Black Moon. It is not a planet and you cannot see it in the sky. Usually it refers to the lunar apogee (the farthest point of the Moon’s orbit from Earth). Charts show it in a sign and a house.

The astronomy behind it

The Moon moves on an ellipse, so its distance from Earth changes. The farthest point is called apogee. That is a geometric fact; you can read more about the Moon itself. The name is also used for an asteroid called Lilith and for the “true” (osculating) Black Moon, based on the Moon’s instantaneous orbit. These give different positions, so two apps may show different results.

What astrology says

The name comes from a mythic figure of a rejected, independent woman. In modern astrology, Lilith is often linked with boundaries, self-definition and the parts of ourselves we hid because they did not fit expectations. In the astrological tradition, the sign and house suggest where this theme may feel strongest. The bright side is honesty and the courage to say no; the shadow side can be withdrawal or a feeling of not being accepted. This is a prompt for reflection, not a prediction, and it does not cause events.

Questions and answers

Is Lilith a planet?

No. In astrology Lilith is a calculated point (the lunar apogee) or, in another usage, an asteroid. It is not a planet.

Why do different sites show different Lilith positions?

Because several methods exist: mean and true Black Moon, plus the asteroid Lilith. Each gives a different position.
