How Does AI Calculate Planet Positions?
Planet positions come from mathematical orbit models and tables called ephemerides, such as those published by NASA’s JPL. An AI can call such a tool and explain the result, but a language model computing “in its head” may get it wrong.
The short answer
An AI does not see the planets. Accurate positions come from ephemerides, tables of computed coordinates over time, built from observations and the laws of motion and gravity. One well-known source is NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). A program takes a date, time and place, and returns coordinates that can be placed relative to the ecliptic.
Where AI fits in
A reliable AI assistant usually calls a calculation tool and then explains the output. That separates calculation from storytelling. A language model answering from memory alone may produce wrong degrees or dates, one form of AI hallucination. It is wise to check numbers against an ephemeris (ephemerides and accuracy).
What affects accuracy
- exact time and time zone;
- the observer’s location (important for the Moon and the ascendant);
- the celestial mechanics model used;
- the coordinate system chosen.
The astrological layer
After the calculation, astrology is a separate step: in the tradition, positions are read symbolically, for inspiration and reflection. It is a cultural tradition, not science and not prediction. See the difference between astronomy and astrology.
Questions and answers
Can a chatbot work out where Mars is by itself?
It is more dependable when it uses an ephemeris or a calculation program. From memory alone, a language model can be wrong.
Why do two sources give slightly different degrees?
Because of different models, rounding, coordinate systems and the precision of the input time.
