Questions and bridges
What is a birth chart and how is it read?
A birth chart (natal chart) is a diagram of the sky as seen from your birthplace at the moment you were born. In astrological tradition it is read as a symbolic portrait of temperament and life themes, not as a forecast. Readers usually go from the big picture to details: Sun, Moon and Ascendant first, then planets, houses and aspects.
The short answer
A birth chart is a circular diagram of the heavens for an exact date, time and place. The planetary positions are calculated astronomically from ephemerides (tables of where bodies are in the sky), such as those published by JPL. The interpretation, however, belongs to astrological tradition and is not scientifically validated.
What is in a chart
- Planets and luminaries – in tradition, each stands for a way of acting: the Sun for core identity, the Moon for feelings, Mercury for thinking, Venus for values.
- Zodiac signs – the style in which a planet expresses itself.
- Houses – twelve areas of life, such as home, work and relationships. See the houses.
- Aspects – angles between planets, seen by tradition as a conversation between them. See aspects.
- Ascendant – the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. See the Ascendant.
Reading it step by step
- Start with the Sun, Moon and Ascendant, the Big Three.
- Notice the balance of elements and modalities, for example mostly fire or mostly water.
- See which houses the planets occupy.
- Add the main aspects.
- Look for an overall theme rather than isolated verdicts.
Birth time matters because the degree of the Ascendant and the house cusps shift noticeably within just a few minutes. Treat a reading as inspiration and reflection, not as advice for decisions.
Questions and answers
Do I need my exact birth time?
The day is enough for the Sun and most planets, but the Moon moves quickly and can change sign during the day, while the Ascendant and houses depend on the time. Without it the chart is incomplete.
Does a birth chart predict the future?
No. In modern astrological reading it is a symbolic portrait and a prompt for reflection; there is no scientific evidence that planets cause events.
