Questions and bridges
What Is Synastry in Astrology?
Synastry is a technique in the astrological tradition where two natal charts are laid side by side and the aspects between the two people’s planets are studied. It is a tool for reflection and conversation, not a verdict on a relationship.
The short answer
Synastry means comparing two birth charts. In the astrological tradition, practitioners look at how one person’s planets fall in relation to the other’s planets and angles, and which aspects (angular relationships) form between them. It is not science, and it cannot predict whether a relationship will last.
What gets compared
Traditionally, attention goes to:
- Sun and Moon: how identity and emotional needs meet.
- Venus and Mars: styles of affection, attraction and desire.
- Ascendant and houses: which area of one person’s life is touched by the other’s planets.
- Aspects: a conjunction is read as strong merging, a trine as ease, and a square as friction that invites growth.
Reading it sensibly
Every couple has easier and more challenging spots. In the tradition, tension is not an ill omen but a prompt for honest conversation. Synastry is more of a mirror than a forecast. Accurate birth data matters, and each person’s natal chart is a good starting point.
Synastry and the composite chart
Synastry compares two charts side by side, while a composite chart builds a third chart for the relationship itself. The two approaches complement each other.
Ultimately, relationships depend on choices, care and communication, not on where the planets stand.
Questions and answers
Can synastry tell me if we are compatible?
No. In the tradition it describes themes and dynamics in a relationship, but it does not deliver a verdict. Compatibility depends on the people and their choices.
What do I need for a synastry reading?
The date, time and place of birth for both people. Without an accurate time, elements such as the Ascendant and houses cannot be determined reliably.
