Is There a 13th Zodiac Sign? Ophiuchus Explained
No, Western astrology has no 13th sign. Ophiuchus is a constellation the Sun passes through from about late November to mid-December, but the traditional zodiac is twelve equal 30° sections, a different system from constellation borders.
The short answer
No. Western astrology uses twelve signs. Ophiuchus (the “Serpent Bearer”) is a genuine constellation and the Sun does cross it, but it has never been part of the traditional zodiac.
What astronomy says
The International Astronomical Union (IAU) defines the boundaries of 88 constellations. The ecliptic, the Sun’s apparent yearly path, crosses thirteen of them, Ophiuchus included. Their borders are uneven in size: the Sun spends far less time in Libra than in Virgo. See the ecliptic and Ophiuchus.
What the tradition says
In the astrological tradition the zodiac is a measuring system: a 360° circle split into twelve equal 30° sections, starting at the March equinox. The signs carry constellation names but do not follow constellation borders. Over centuries, precession has also shifted the two apart. More in why signs do not match constellations.
Worth remembering
This is not a “discovery” that changes your sign. Astronomy describes where stars are; astrology is a cultural tradition with its own symbolism. They answer different questions. Some schools, such as sidereal astrology, use different calculations, yet they also keep twelve signs. See also astronomy vs astrology.
Questions and answers
Does Ophiuchus change my sign?
No. In traditional astrology your sign comes from a 30° section of the zodiac, not from constellation borders.
Does the Sun really pass through Ophiuchus?
Yes. By IAU boundaries the Sun crosses it from roughly late November to mid-December.
