Questions and bridges

Do I Need My Exact Birth Time?

Not strictly, but it matters. Without an exact time the Ascendant and the houses cannot be calculated, and the Moon may sit on a sign border. Your Sun sign and most planets stay reliable.

Short answer

For a light read of your Sun sign you do not need the time. For a full natal chart, the astrological tradition treats it as important, because the Ascendant and the houses depend on it.

What the time changes

The Ascendant (the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth) changes roughly every two hours. The houses and the Midheaven (MC, from Latin Medium Coeli – the point where the ecliptic crosses the meridian above the horizon) shift with it. That is why two people born on the same day can have quite different charts.

The Moon is the fastest-moving of the main bodies, covering about 13 degrees a day. If it is near the edge of a sign, the birth time decides which sign it was in.

What stays the same

The Sun and the slow outer planets barely move within one day, so your Sun sign and most aspects (the angles between planets) remain dependable. The exception is a birthday on the day a sign changes, where time and place matter.

If you do not know it

Check your birth certificate or ask relatives. If that is impossible, use a chart set for a nominal noon and read only the parts that do not depend on time. See also what if I do not know my birth time and the birth time.

This is a cultural tradition for reflection and inspiration, not a scientific prediction.

Questions and answers

Can a chart be read without a birth time?

Yes, partly: the Sun sign, most planets and their aspects can be read, but not the Ascendant or houses.

How exact must the time be?

The closer the better. A few minutes rarely matter, but an hour or two can change the Ascendant.
