The astrological tradition
Sextile: An Opening for Cooperation
A sextile is an astrological aspect in which two planets sit about 60 degrees apart, one sixth of the circle. In the astrological tradition it joins signs of compatible elements and is read as a gentle opening for cooperation that tends to work best when someone takes the first step.
This is astrological tradition — told as cultural heritage and food for thought, for inspiration, not as science.
The sextile is one of the classical aspects of astrology. This article describes what the tradition says about it. It is a cultural and symbolic heritage offered for inspiration and reflection, not a scientific claim that planets cause events in our lives. For the wider picture, see Aspects.
The 60-degree angle
The word sextile comes from the Latin for “sixth.” The full circle of the sky measures 360 degrees, and a sextile is exactly one sixth of it: 60 degrees. When two planets in a birth chart or in the current sky are separated by roughly that distance along the ecliptic (the apparent yearly path of the Sun among the stars), astrologers speak of a sextile.
The angle is rarely exact, so the tradition allows some leeway called an orb (the permitted deviation from the exact angle). Its size varies by school and author, some being strict and others generous. If two sources disagree about whether a pair of planets is in sextile, that is usually why. An orb is a convention of the tradition, not a constant of nature.
Astronomically this is plain geometry: the angular separation between two positions on the sky. The meaning astrology attaches to it is a cultural layer on top. The difference between the two fields is explained in Astronomy vs. astrology.
A sextile between compatible elements
The zodiac is divided into 12 signs of 30 degrees each, so 60 degrees equals exactly two signs of distance. Aries and Gemini, Taurus and Cancer, or Leo and Libra are examples of such pairs.
In the traditional scheme, when the sextile is counted by sign, the two signs always belong to compatible elements. Fire and air share an active, so-called masculine character in the old terminology, while earth and water share a receptive, so-called feminine one. So fire signs form sextiles with air signs, and earth signs with water signs. You can read more about the four elements in The Elements.
This is why the tradition sees in the sextile a harmony of complement. The two planets speak from different signs, but from related families. They do not use quite the same language, yet they understand each other.
What the tradition says about its symbolism
Aspects have been central to astrologers since antiquity. Ptolemy, a second-century author from Alexandria, discusses in his work the Tetrabiblos (“Four Books”) the relationships between signs and separates the more harmonious from the more tense. The sextile and trine fall in the first group; the square and opposition in the second. This outlook was carried through the medieval period into the present day.
Modern descriptions of the sextile often use words such as opportunity, ease, friendly support and a lively exchange of ideas. The two planets involved seem to offer each other a hand. For instance, Mercury sextile Venus is symbolically linked with pleasant conversation and a knack for expressing oneself graciously, while Sun sextile Moon is linked with a certain agreement between will and feeling. These are images from the tradition, not predictions.
The key word for the sextile is opportunity. Unlike stronger aspects, tradition says it does not impose itself. It is described as a door left ajar that someone has to open. This is why the sextile is often said to reward those who take a step. As a metaphor this is useful: the potential in a situation needs attention and effort.
How it differs from the trine
The sextile is often compared with the trine, a 120-degree aspect joining signs of the same element. Both are considered harmonious, but their character differs:
- Angle: the sextile is 60°, the trine 120°.
- Element: in a sextile the elements differ but are compatible; in a trine they are the same.
- Feeling: the trine is described as natural flow and ease, sometimes so effortless that it is taken for granted. The sextile is livelier and more active. It invites rather than carries.
- Weight: tradition usually ranks the trine higher in importance than the sextile.
One image is that the trine is a current that carries you, while the sextile is a hand held out at the threshold. Both are pleasant, but the second asks for your participation.
For contrast, with the square (90°) and the opposition (180°) the tradition speaks of tension that invites reflection, and with the conjunction (0°) of a blending of two forces.
The sextile in a natal chart and in transits
In a natal chart, a sextile between two planets is read as an inborn link between two areas of character. The tradition describes it as talents that cooperate if we choose to use them. It is important to look at the whole chart: one sextile is just one thread in a larger fabric.
In transits, the current positions of the planets are compared with the natal chart. A transit sextile is described as a period suited to conversations, learning, new acquaintances and small initiatives. You do not need to treat it as a sign. You can simply use it as a prompt to ask what opportunities lie around you.
Reading it sensibly
Astrology is a tradition offered for inspiration, not a science. A sextile does not predict success and guarantees nothing. It is not a basis for financial, health or life decisions. It is best taken as a symbolic language that encourages you to seek connections, stay curious and extend a hand to the people around you.
Questions and answers
What is a sextile in astrology?
A sextile is an aspect of 60 degrees between two planets or points in a chart, one sixth of the circle. The tradition describes it as a mild, favorable link that offers opportunities for cooperation.
Which signs form a sextile?
Signs that are two signs apart, such as Aries and Gemini or Taurus and Cancer. Fire signs sextile air signs, and earth signs sextile water signs.
What is the difference between a sextile and a trine?
A sextile is 60° and links different but compatible elements, while a trine is 120° and links signs of the same element. Tradition describes the trine as a more natural flow and the sextile as an opportunity that needs initiative.
Does a sextile guarantee success?
No. It is a symbolic interpretation from the astrological tradition, offered for inspiration. It is not scientifically proven and should not replace your own judgment or professional advice.
