The astrological tradition
Lunar Nodes by Sign: The Six Axes in Astrology
The lunar nodes are two points where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic, always opposite each other, and they circle the zodiac in about 18.6 years. In astrological tradition the North Node is a symbol of growth direction and the South Node of familiar, well-practised ground.
This is astrological tradition — told as cultural heritage and food for thought, for inspiration, not as science.
What the nodes are
The lunar nodes are not bodies but two points. The Moon’s orbit is tilted against the ecliptic (the Sun’s apparent yearly path), and the two crossing points are the nodes. Eclipses happen when a New or Full Moon occurs near one of them. The science is covered in the lunar nodes in astronomy.
This article describes astrological tradition, a cultural heritage offered for inspiration, not as prediction.
The 18.6-year rhythm
The nodes drift backwards through the zodiac, against the usual order of the signs. A full circuit takes about 18.6 years, so the axis moves into a new pair of signs roughly every year and a half. Tradition treats each change as an invitation to reflect, not as a fixed event. See also solar eclipses, whose seasons also depend on where the nodes lie.
How tradition reads the axis
In a natal chart (a map of the sky at birth) the North Node symbolises a direction of growth, often unfamiliar and a little awkward. The South Node stands for what is known: talents, habits, comfort zones. Neither is better; the idea is balance, not abandoning what you do well. For basics see the natal chart.
The six axes
Aries – Libra. A cardinal axis of fire and air. North Node in Aries points to finding your own voice; South in Libra to a habit of seeking agreement. The reverse suggests learning to share decisions in partnership.
Taurus – Scorpio. A fixed axis of earth and water. North in Taurus leans toward simplicity, steadiness and quiet pleasures; South in Scorpio toward intensity. The reverse speaks of loosening control and trusting change.
Gemini – Sagittarius. A mutable axis of air and fire. North in Gemini suggests curiosity, dialogue and detail; South in Sagittarius a pull toward big beliefs. The reverse invites a wider view.
Cancer – Capricorn. A cardinal axis of water and earth. North in Cancer stresses care, home and emotional openness; South in Capricorn self-reliance and discipline. The reverse is about building structure without losing warmth.
Leo – Aquarius. A fixed axis of fire and air. North in Leo invites personal creativity and joyful self-expression; South in Aquarius the group role. The reverse points to contributing to a community.
Virgo – Pisces. A mutable axis of earth and water. North in Virgo points to practicality and order; South in Pisces to dreaminess and dissolving. The reverse suggests seeking meaning beyond routine.
Using the symbolism
The nodes are read together with houses and aspects. Treat them as a question for yourself: what do I already do well, and where would I like to stretch?
A calm approach
Tradition promises no outcome. Astronomy supplies the exact positions; the interpretation remains a personal choice and a personal story.
Questions and answers
How long does the axis stay in one pair of signs?
About a year and a half. A full cycle of the nodes through the zodiac takes about 18.6 years.
Is the North Node good and the South Node bad?
No. Tradition describes them as a direction of growth and a familiar base, complementing each other.
Do the nodes predict events?
No. They are a symbol for reflection. Eclipses occur near the nodes for astronomical reasons.
Where can I find my nodes?
In a natal chart calculated from date, place and time of birth. The date alone gives a close estimate.
